The Irrational Thoughts of Sky MacEntamney

"The problem with most Christians today is that they would die rather than think - in fact most probably do."

Os Guinness, The Grave Digger File

Sky pondered this Guinness quotation as she stared, believe it or not, at an enormous pint of Guinness. The problem with most Christians these days, she thought, is that they'd see the word "Guinness" and refuse to read the words that come before it! Unfortunate surname. Should have been called "Os Pure Orange" or even more daring "Os Soda Water and Lime". Mind you, to get back to the point, wasn't it an amazing coincidence that Sky was staring at that enormous pint of Guinness when the quote entered her mind? Didn't enter her mind; must have already been in her mind. Probably came from one compartment of the mind to another. Truth of the matter was her previous thought was how many times would she need to empty her bladder once the glass was empty. The idea of carrying a bucket around didn't seem so strange after all. Could always write John 7:38 on the side of the bucket. Sky gave herself a good slap around the head. Stop thinking bad thoughts, you'll speed the Rapture ...

"Coincidence" - ever since she'd learnt how to spell it Sky was a great believer in the word (that's word with a small 'w') For a moment there it was novel to think of Sky being a great believer but let's not get stuck on that thought.

"It is wrong, then, to chide the novel for being fascinated by mysterious coincidences, but it is right to chide man for being blind to such coincidences in his daily life, for he thereby deprives his life of a dimension of beauty."

Milan Kundera, Unbearable Lightness of Being

I know you haven't a clue what that's about, but if you take the time you'll notice that the word 'coincidence' is mentioned twice and that's the word that happens to be on the hot seat of Sky's mind at the minute. Incidentally the reason why we're considering coincidences is because Sky lost her original irrational thoughts, the ones she prepared about two years ago. So she was delving two years into her room to try to find them. Not pleasant. Like looking for a needle in a haystack. Who in their right mind would consider taking their do-it-yourself embroidery pack out into a barn anyway?! Seems like a cover for something much more sordid. But I'm not reviewing Woody Allen's latest film now. As it says in 1 Corinthians 7 "It is better to marry than to burn with passion." Does that mean when you marry you stop burning??? No thanks! I'll stick to the heat inside me and ringless fingers.

Sky realised that she hadn't done what she'd set out to do - i.e. discuss in great depth the words of Os Guinness. Still at least she remembered the quote and if it wasn't for the original actual pint she wouldn't have. It was a chance that all this had happened in Sky's head, and as the mighty Kundera once wrote :

"Chance and chance alone has a message for us. Everything that occurs out of necessity, everything expected, repeated, day in and day out, is mute. Only chance can speak to us. We read its message much as gypsies read the images made by coffee grounds at the bottom of a cup."

Sky got up and went for a long pee.
