Cruel Inventions

Sam Phillips continues the razzle-dazzle on her second Virgin outing. (She had a previous career as a Christian singer under the name Leslie - Sam is her nickname.) Blending neo-psychedelic overtones into folk, pop and rock, she lays down some of the most unusual and intoxicating music of the year. Phillips' beau T-Bone Burnett provides one of his most inventive productions, keeping things sparse but somewhat exotic on tunes like Standing Still, Cruel Inventions and Tripping Over Gravity.

Her lyrics are happening, her music is cool (haunting here, irresistible there, even danceable).

Sam Phillips is just too good for words.
