A charming live performer and distinctive vocalist, Sam (nee Leslie) Phillips continues in the vein she established on her first two albums. She mines a traditional folk-rock format that leans heavily on producer/hubby T Bone Burnett's stable of first-rate musicians and '60s-inspired blend of Beatles pop and Dylanesque blues rock, with guitar licks lifted from classic records from the Byrds to the Yardbirds. All of it frames Phillips' own pithy, if not ground-breaking, observations on relationships personal, political and spiritual. Still, although it's well done, it's also a bit studied and bloodless.
