Listening to a Sam Phillips record is like stepping into a musical wonderland of exotic sounds, spine-tingling harmonies and razzle-dazzle lyrics. Her music is sort of rock, sort of pop, sort of psychedelic, and sort of like nothing you've ever heard before. Same Changes weds a surging push-and-pull rhythm to a thought-provoking lyric about the state of the world, while the psychedelic pop of Strawberry Road sounds like a long-lost John Lennon song from the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band era. Producer T-Bone Burnett (her husband) works miracles with the arrangements, keeping everything very simple sounding while throwing in all sorts of musical exotica. Best of all, it's the kind of stuff that is both instantly accessible and deep enough that it'll probably take you years to figure some songs out.
