SAM PHILLIPS' 'OMNIPOP: IT'S ONLY A FLESH WOUND LAMBCHOP' (Virgin) is her best album since 'The Indescribable Wow.' This is the sort of thing that VH-1 would milk to death, in a better universe. Lyrically astute, when it's not being self-consciously obscure to poetic effect. Hubbie T Bone Burnett's production, which one takes to mean production and arrangements, is stunning throughout. Just listen to the song titled "Zero Zero Zero!," with its echoes of Talking Heads' echoes of King Sunny Ade's echoes of Hawaiian slack key grooves. It's that kind of record -- the sort of thing Elvis Costello wishes he were making these days.
